Preface
Dear Reader,
This Introduction into Service Manual presents the
new CLS-Class coupe in model series 218.
The purpose of this brochure is to acquaint you with
the technical highlights of this new vehicle in advance
of its market launch. This brochure is intended to
provide information for people employed in service or
maintenance/repair as well as for aftersales staff. It is
assumed here that the reader is already familiar with
the Mercedes-Benz model series currently on the

In terms of the contents, the emphasis in this Introduction into Service Manual is on presenting new and
modified components and systems.
This Introduction into Service Manual is not intended
as an aid for repairs or for the diagnosis of technical
problems. For such needs, more extensive information
is available in the Workshop Information System (WIS)
and via Xentry Diagnostics.
WIS is updated continuously. Therefore, the information available there reflects the latest technical status
of our vehicles.
The Introduction into Service Manual presents initial
information relating to the coupe in model series 218
and, as such, is not stored in WIS. The contents of this
brochure are not updated. No provision is made for
supplements.
We will publicize modifications and new features in the
relevant WIS documents. The information presented in
this Introduction into Service Manual may therefore
differ from the more up-to-date information found in
WIS.
All information relating to technical data, equipment
and options is valid as of the copy deadline in
September 2010 and may therefore differ from the
current production configuration.

Vehicle concept
Innovations
In January 2011, the CLS-Class of model series 219
will be superseded by the newly developed coupe of
model series 218.
With the new CLS-Class, the customer will obtain a
coupe which sets the standard in terms of its new
design, reliability, comfort, efficiency and safety.
• Full-LED headlamps incl. Intelligent Light System
(ILS) and Night-View function as special equipment
(SA)
• Electromechanical steering (EPS)
Dimensional concept
The dimensional concept of the new CLS-Class is
derived from that of the predecessor model series 219
and is characterized by more space in the interior and
a restyled body.
The vehicle length has increased by 30 mm. This
allowed the wheelbase to be extended by 20 mm.
With the new CLS-Class, Mercedes-Benz is underlining
its aspiration to lead the market in the segment of
4-door coupes, particularly in the areas of design,
active and passive safety as well as environmental
technology.
Overview
Brief description
Innovative driving assistance systems
Alongside ATTENTION ASSIST (attention assistance
system) which is included as standard, the following
assistance systems are available as special equipment:
• Adaptive Highbeam Assist
• Speed Limit Assist
• Automatic lane recognition
or Active Lane Keeping Assist
• Blind Spot Assist or
Active Blind Spot Assist
• Active Parking Assist incl. PARKTRONIC
• Night View Assist Plus
• Reversing camera
• DISTRONIC PLUS including BAS PLUS and
PRE-SAFE® brake
Environmental compatibility
Crucial factors in environmental compatibility are not
only fuel economy and emissions while driving, but
also the environmental burden and consumption of
resources from manufacture through vehicle use to
recycling and disposal.
The new CLS-Coupe sedan is thus certified on the
basis of the strict international ISO standard 14062
"Design for Environment" at market launch. This environmental certification confirms the holistic approach
in aspects of environmental protection:
i Note
Further details on the electrical systems of model
series 218 (e.g. function descriptions and the locations of electrical components) are available in the
Workshop Information System (WIS) under "Basic
knowledge/functions" (GF).

BlueEFFICIENCY measures
1 Weight reduction
4 Underfloor paneling
Due to the lightweight construction concept
featuring a combination of high-strength and ultra
high-strength materials in the bodyshell and due to
lightweight construction measures implemented on
the engine hood, doors and wheels, it was possible
to significantly reduce the weight of the vehicle.
The underfloor is equipped with a continuous
engine compartment and main floor panel as well
as an aerodynamically designed spare wheel well in
order to reduce aerodynamic drag.
2 Fuel pump
Regulation of the fuel pump significantly reduces its
consumption of electrical power. The power
requirements of the fuel pump depend on the
amount of fuel currently required.
3 Rear axle
The extended rear axle ratio lowers the engine
speed and thus fuel consumption.
10
5 Outside mirror housing
The new freestanding outside mirrors have been
optimized aerodynamically.
6 Tires (standard equipment)
The use of silicates in the tires means that the tire
temperature quickly increases in critical situations
to improve the grip to the level of a standard tire.
This means that all properties relevant to usage can
be retained while improving the rolling resistance at
the same time.

7 Radiator shutters
9 Energy management
The flow of cooling air through the cooling module and
engine compartment can be regulated by opening the
radiator shutters.
Closing the radiator shutters at low outside temperatures prevents the engine compartment from cooling
down. This means that more heat output is available
for the passenger compartment. In addition, the
reduced volume of cooling air reduces the aerodynamic drag of the vehicle.
When the battery charge level is sufficiently high,
alternator operation is scaled back to supply the base
load requirements of the vehicle. The vehicle is then
only supplied with power by the alternator, the battery
is charged by occasional "coupling" of the alternator in
deceleration mode.
8 ECO start/stop function
With the ECO start/stop function, the engine can be
shut off when the vehicle is at a standstill depending
on vehicle and driver-related conditions in order to
reduce the fuel consumption in the driving cycle.
Overview
Brief description
10 Engine optimizations
The engines used combine high power with low fuel
consumption. On the 4-cylinder diesel engine
OM 651, this is achieved through dual-stage turbocharging.
The new gasoline engines M 276, M 278 and
M 157 AMG make use of downsizing, modularization
and technological developments across the board.
The engines feature newly developed piezo fuel injectors, multi-spark ignition (6-cylinder gasoline engine
with stratified operation M 276 DES), turbocharging
(M 278 and M 157 AMG) as well as a new oil and
coolant thermal management system.
Summary
When combined, all of these measures result in significantly lower fuel consumption.

Front view
In its second generation, the new CLS-Class once
again embodies the unique four-door coupe
concept of Mercedes-Benz.
The front is characterized by the distinctive coupe
grille. The two slats of the grille, combined with the
large, centrally positioned Mercedes star, indicate
that this vehicle belongs to the Mercedes-Benz
family of coupes.
The "soft nose" front end is a new feature with its
distinct tapering and large air intakes. Incorporating
a plastic bumper and aluminum engine hood, the
soft nose meets the relevant legal requirements in
the area of pedestrian protection.
The front fenders of the CLS 63 AMG are 8 mm
wider, underlining the sporty character of the
vehicle. As a result, the track width of the vehicle is
different but the overall vehicle width remains at
1881 mm.
Overall vehicle
Exterior
The swept headlamps with their wide, outwardpointing design form the basis of the side contour.
Alongside the standard bi-xenon headlamps with
round daytime running lights (CLS 63 AMG with
LED daytime running lights) in the bumper,
full-LED headlamps with LED daytime running light
strips are available for the first time as special
equipment (SA).

Exterior
Rear view
The design of the rear end is distinctive with an
emphasis on its width. This effect is underlined by
the markedly tapered C-pillars in combination with
the deeply contoured arching over the rear wheel
wells.
Extending into the side wall, the full-LED rear lamps
are a standard feature of the vehicle. The rear fog
lamp has been relocated centrally to the lower area
of the bumper. This has allowed the taillights and
turn signal indicators to be arranged in a ring shape
around the backup lamps. The brake light consists
of the same visual pattern as the taillight. The brake

The instrument panel is formally divided into three
levels:
• The dark upper section
• The large wooden section
• The lower section, which is offset in a lighter
color in some color variants or in black
This partitioning provides a feeling of spaciousness
due to the wide visual appearance. The instrument
panel is available in various color combinations for
the different equipment variants. The color separation is softened by decorative features and trim in
wood or piano lacquer or, on the CLS 63 AMG and
"Edition 1" vehicles, in carbon.
Slat-type ventilation openings with illuminated

Multicontour seat (code 409)
On the ECE version, the front seats are equipped
with fully electric seat adjustment as standard. The
driver seat features a manually operated lumbar
support. The familiar memory package is available
as special equipment (code 275), which also
includes an electric 4-way lumbar support.
As special equipment, the driver and front
passenger seat (only the driver seat on the USA and
Canada variants) can be ordered as multicontour
seats. On the CLS 63 AMG, the multicontour seat is
standard equipment.
On all other national versions and on the
CLS 63 AMG, the memory package incl. fully electric front seats forms part of the standard equipment.
The front head restraints have a NECK-PRO module
and their inclination can be steplessly adjusted. The
head restraints can be vertically adjusted by
85 mm.
Overall vehicle
Interior
The multicontour seat offers the ability to further
improve comfort by adjusting the length of the seat
cushion and the contour of the backrest individually
and steplessly to fit the body shape of the driver
and front passenger.
The seat contour is adjusted through the inflation
and deflation of air chambers which are integrated
in the front seat cushion and backrest. The seat
cushion contains an air chamber for the thigh area
as well as one each in the left and right sides of the
backrest and two in the center. The controls are
installed on the side of the seat cushion between
the side bolsters and the center console.

Rear seats
The active multicontour seat is a development of
the multicontour seat. As well as seat contour
adjustment, the active multicontour seat contains a
massage function and automatic adjustment of the
lateral support of the backrest to suit the current
driving situation.
The rear seats are designed as two individual seats
with two head restraints designed to optimize visibility. An asymmetrically divided, folding rear seat
backrest is available as special equipment (code
287). The rear seats are separated by an armrest
and a rear center console. Certain child seats can
be connected to the vehicle body via the ISOFIX
fastening system.
In the USA and Canada variants, the active multicontour seat is only available for the driver.
When the vehicle dynamics function is activated,
the air pressure in the side bolsters of the backrest
is changed electropneumatically according to the
steering angle, the lateral acceleration and the
speed of the vehicle. When the active multicontour
seat vehicle dynamics function is switched off, the
pressure in both chambers in the backrest returns
to the pressure that existed before the function was
activated.
There is an additional attachment point
(TOP-TETHER) for child seats on both the left and
right of the rear shelf.

Maintenance
ASSYST PLUS
Extended maintenance strategy
Workshop display
As on the predecessor model series, the tried-andtested extended maintenance strategy is also used for
the new CLS-Coupe. Both workshops and the
customer will benefit from the extended maintenance
scopes from the very first kilometer driven.
By making maintenance less complicated and introducing the basic service which covers the technically
essential items, we are able to offer maintenance that
is more cost-efficient and competitive without
compromising the usual Mercedes-Benz service
quality.
The workshop code is stored in the maintenance
computer and is read out by the customer service
advisor via the instrument cluster or Xentry Diagnostics. The customer has no access to this workshop
code.
As with the current model series, there is a basic
service and a supplementary PLUS package.
The workshop code contains all vehicle-specific
service items which currently need to be performed on
the vehicle, depending on mileage, time and equipment.
The workshop code can have 3 to 6 digits. It consists
of numbers and/or letters.
PLUS package
The service advisor must offer the PLUS package to
the customer during a consultation because it is no
longer included in the conventional maintenance
scopes.
The aim of this consultation is to offer the customer
the package best suited to him or her.

items for the pending service.
Maintenance-relevant special equipment must be
determined by the service advisor.
All service, body and major assembly operations are
documented in a central database using the Digital
Service Booklet (DSB). The customer also receives a
service report which he/she stores in the service
booklet.
If the workshop code is entered with the complete

Fuel system
Diesel engines
On diesel engines OM 651 and OM 642, fuel is
supplied via the low-pressure fuel circuit and highpressure fuel circuit subsystems.
The fuel reaches the high-pressure pump from the
tank via the low-pressure fuel circuit. When actuated,
the fuel pump draws the fuel out of the fuel feed
module and pumps it through the fuel filter to the highpressure pump. Depending on the fuel requirements,
the fuel pressure is regulated to approx. 4.0 bar. In
addition, the quantity control valve regulates the flow
of fuel to the high-pressure pump in order to keep its
temperature low.
In the high-pressure fuel circuit, the fuel is pumped
into the left-hand rail and from there simultaneously
into the right-hand rail by the high-pressure pump
depending on the accelerator pedal signal, the engine
speed and the fuel temperature. The fuel reaches the
fuel injectors from the respective rail via the high-pressure lines. Based on a performance map, the CDI
control unit calculates the cylinder-selective injection
quantity for the respective operating condition. This is
dependent on the fuel pressure in the rails and the
actuation duration of the fuel injectors.
Fuel preheating
The fuel preheating system heating element is integrated in the fuel main filter in order to ensure
flowability of the fuel at low outside temperatures.
Excepted from this are vehicles with (code U41) Fuel/
water separator and lubrication package, with (code
U42) BlueTEC diesel emission control (SCR) and with
(code 494) USA version. These vehicles feature a fuel
filter condensation sensor with heating element for
water level monitoring.
The heating element is energized by the glow output
stage and warms up the fuel in the fuel filter. The
current condensation level is transmitted to the CDI
control unit via the fuel filter condensation sensor. As
of a condensation level of approx. 100 ml, the CDI
control unit transmits a message via chassis CAN to
the instrument cluster, which displays this on the
multifunction display as a warning message.
The fuel pressure in the rails is controlled by the pressure regulating valve and the quantity control valve.
The fuel pressure actually present in the rails is
recorded by the rail pressure sensor, continuously
forwarded onto the CDI control unit and limited to
max. 2000 bar by the pressure regulating valve.
i Note
Leak fuel and unneeded fuel is returned to the fuel
tank via the return line.

Fuel system
Gasoline engines
On engines M 276, M 278 and M 157, fuel supply is
also carried out by the low-pressure fuel circuit and
high-pressure fuel circuit subsystems.
The fuel reaches the high-pressure pump from the
tank via the low-pressure fuel circuit. When actuated, the fuel pump draws the fuel from the fuel
feed module and pumps it through the fuel filter to
the high-pressure pump (M 276) or to the two highpressure pumps (M 278 and M 157). Depending on
the fuel requirement, the fuel pressure is varied
from approx. 4.5 to 6.7 bar.
In the filter feed line there is a check valve which
prevents the fuel pressure from dissipating when
the fuel pump is shut off.
The fuel from the fuel tank flows from the low-pressure fuel distributor to the high-pressure pump. This
increases the fuel pressure to up to 200 bar
(depending on the operating state) and directs it
through the high-pressure line and the rails to the
fuel injectors.
In the high-pressure fuel circuit, the high fuel pressure necessary for jet-guided direct injection is
generated, regulated and stored in the rails.
The fuel injectors in each cylinder bank are supplied
with fuel directly from the corresponding rail. There
are no return lines on the rails.
Each high-pressure pump has a quantity control
valve which regulates the fuel quantity supplied to
the pump element according to the specified fuel
pressure.
The fuel pressure and temperature sensor registers
the current fuel high pressure (rail pressure) and
the fuel temperature in the left rail on the M 276 or
in the right rail on the M 278 and M 157. The rail
pressure is regulated by the ME-SFI [ME] (motor
electronics) control unit, which actuates the quantity control valve with a PWM signal until the specified pressure is obtained in the rail.

Fuel tank
As in the predecessor model series, the fuel tank in
model series 218 is located in front of the rear axle
under the rear bench seat in order to provide the
largest possible opening between the trunk and the
passenger compartment when the rear seat backrest
is folded down.
The blown fuel tank is a new development and is made
of high-density polyethylene (HDPE). The complex
shape of the thermoplastic fuel tank has a multiplelayer wall construction of six layers with a block layer
to prevent hydrocarbon penetration.
In all models, two service holes on the top of the tank
facilitate removal of the pump and the filter unit with
pressure sensor. The expansion volume is inside the
fuel tank. The fuel tank fill level is measured by a dedicated float-and-lever sensor in each chamber. Each
float-and-lever sensor has its own electrical connector
plug.
Gasoline engine purging with (code 494) USA
version
The activated charcoal filter shutoff valve is actuated
by the ME-SFI [ME] control unit to control the ventilation connections. This allows the legally prescribed
leak test of the purge system to be performed.
Via the OBD pressure sensor (On-Board Diagnosis =
OBD), the internal pressure of the fuel tank is recorded
for the leak test. This is located in the center above the
tunnel on the fuel tank.

Transmission
7-speed automatic transmission
7G-TRONIC PLUS
In all models (except CLS 63 AMG), the familiar
7G-TRONIC 7-speed automatic transmission is
installed as standard as the 7G-TRONIC PLUS with
start/stop function and DIRECT-SELECT selector
lever.
The consumption-reducing measures include a dual
turbine torsional damper with rpm-adaptive centrifugal pendulum (not on CLS 350), which allows for
extreme reduction of slip at the torque converter
lockup clutch, combined with greater mechanical
damping insulation even at very low loads and
engine speeds, including during shift operations.
Furthermore, drag has been reduced by a new
bearing on the oil pump, improved Torlon rings on
the input and output shafts as well as a new automatic transmission fluid (FE-ATF) with reduced
viscosity.
The color of the new fluid has been changed from
red to blue because it may not be used in older
model transmissions. The notes in service information SI00.40-P-0014A in WIS on usage of the new
transmission fluid must be observed.
The oil change intervals have been extended
because the transmission fluid is subjected to less
energy due to the minimization of drag. For more
information, see the corresponding documents in
WIS.

Automatic transmission oil supply
General
The oil supply to the electrohydraulically controlled
automatic transmission is provided by the oil pump
(primary pump) with the combustion engine
running. It is installed in the transmission bell
housing behind the start-up clutch and is driven by
the drive spigots of the start-up clutch.
Oil supply with combustion engine OFF (stop/
start function)
When the combustion engine is shut off in ECO
start/stop mode, the oil supply by the primary
pump is interrupted. The electric transmission fluid
pump (auxiliary pump) takes over the oil supply to
the shift elements in position.
P27.57-2026-00
During the subsequent start, initiated e.g. by
releasing the service brake, the oil pressure built up
by the auxiliary pump ensures that the vehicle is
ready to start off spontaneously.

Chassis
Steering
Electromechanical steering (EPS)
The new CLS-Coupe is equipped with an electromechanically assisted steering gear as standard equipment.
The steering gear is designed as a direct steering
system. The steering ratio is noticeably more direct
through the steering angle, which significantly
improves vehicle handling and responsiveness.
On the CLS 63 AMG, the steering has an even more
direct set-up with a continuous ratio, providing a more
sporty response particularly around the center position.
The electric power steering consists of the rack-andpinion steering, torque sensor, actuator motor and
electric power steering control unit. The electric
power steering is maintenance free.
The electric power steering provides stepless, speeddependent regulation of steering force assistance. The
advantages compared to hydraulic power steering are:
• Improved steering feel
• Steering force assistance also available during
stop/start operation
• No power steering fluid required
• Compact design
• Speed-dependent power assistance
• Diagnosis capability
The electric power steering consists of the following
subfunctions:
•
•
•
•
Steering force assistance
Steering assistance
Emergency operation
Instrument cluster display
Steering force assistance
The electric power steering control unit determines
the following information to calculate the steering
force assistance required:
The control unit uses this information to calculate the
steering force assistance to be applied from the
stored characteristic map and activates the electric
power steering actuator motor accordingly. The
steering force assistance is transferred from the actuator motor to the rack-and-pinion steering via a belt
drive and recirculating ball mechanism.
Steering assistance
The steering assistance function is intended to help
the driver achieve the optimal steering characteristics
in critical situations. Assistance is provided when
braking on one-sided road surfaces.
Steering assistance is provided via the electric power
steering control unit and Electronic Stability Program
control unit (except (code 233) DISTRONIC PLUS) or
via the Premium Electronic Stability Program control
unit (with (code 233) DISTRONIC PLUS).
Emergency operation
When the electric power steering is switched on, the
electric power steering control unit performs a selftest. If a fault is detected the servo assistance is not
activated.
During driving operation, the electric power steering
control unit checks the signals of the torque sensor
and the current sensor in the actuator motor. If the
signals are outside the defined values, the electric
power steering is switched off.
In both cases, the vehicle can be steered with
increased force of the hand.
Instrument cluster display
The electric power steering control unit control unit
transmits the request for a warning message via
chassis CAN to the instrument cluster. On the multifunction display, the warning message "Power
steering defective! Service required!" is displayed.

Chassis
Axles
Front axle
Rear axle
For the best possible vehicle dynamics and ease of
installation, the front axle and steering gear are preinstalled on a frame-type integral support together with
the engine and transmission. The remarkably rigid and
low-weight frame-type integral support is made of
high-strength steel and is bolted directly onto the
longitudinal members of the body.
The principle of the lightweight independent multilink
rear suspension suspended from a subframe was
selected because of its wheel control properties. The
axle components have been modified in the interests
of greater ride comfort and vehicle dynamics.
For the front suspension, a further developed version
of the three-link front axle has been chosen, as on the
E-Class (W 212). Its major feature consists of two
separate control arms (strut rod and cross strut) in the
lower steering plane. These are steeper than on the
W 212 and raise the roll center to 90 mm. This
provides greater roll support with the same torsion bar
diameter and greater negative camber on the outer
wheel when cornering.
The stabilizer bar is connected to the suspension strut
via a link rod. The strut rod, which points to the front
on an angle, is a weight-optimized, forged aluminum
component. The cross strut aligned in the transverse
direction consists of forged steel.
Lightweight design techniques were used consistently
for the new developments. The panel thicknesses of
the subframe have been adjusted to reduce the
unsprung masses. In addition, almost all wheel control
parts are made of aluminum.
Another comfort-related feature is the use of an additional support for the front subframe mounting on the
body, which considerably increases the rigidity to
introduced forces.
The lighter-weight rear axle carrier made of highstrength steel has been adapted to the new dimensional concept. The box-shaped profile of the two side
parts and the rear cross brace are formed from two
half shells welded together. The front cross brace is a
single shell.
The third link is the tie rod, which forms part of the
new rack-and-pinion steering.
The arrangement and design of the wheel control
parts, and in particular the splitting of the lower wishbone control arm into two individual links, provide
favorable characteristics in terms of axle kinematics.
i Note
If the driver's body impacts with the steering
column, the steering column can move forward by
up to 100 mm under a predefined force in order to
reduce the loads on the driver. For this purpose
the entire substructure of the steering column
tube is suspended on a slide that runs in a
mounting console rigidly mounted in the body.
In the event of a severe frontal impact the lower
part of the steering column can telescope and the
integral corrugated tube can deform.

AMG
On the 4 and 6-cylinder models, the new CLSCoupe is equipped with conventional steel suspension with selective damping system as standard
equipment and with AIRMATIC air suspension with
continuous adjustment damping (code 489) as
special equipment. AIRMATIC forms part of the
standard equipment for the 8-cylinder models.
The CLS 63 AMG is equipped with steel/air suspension as standard. This consists of a combination of
steel suspension on the front axle and air suspension on the rear axle with continuous damper
adjustment. The damping is adjusted wheel-bywheel in accordance with the road surface condition and driving style. Damping stage "C" is always
active after the ignition is switched on.

Adaptive Brake (ABR)
The brake system of the CLS-Coupe with hydraulic
dual-circuit brakes and front axle/rear axle separation of the brake circuits corresponds in principle to
the tried-and-tested design used in the E-Class
(model series 212).
However, as part of the component optimization
process in terms of lightweight construction, the
front floating/fixed caliper with brake caliper
housing features an aluminum or aluminum
composite design. The rear floating caliper with
brake caliper housing is made of aluminum.
AMG
The CLS 63 AMG features composite brake disks
with silver-colored brake calipers as standard. The
brake calipers of the Performance Package are red
(not compulsory). As special equipment, ceramic
brake disks with bronze-colored brake calipers are
available.
Adaptive Brake assists the driver when dangerous

Introduction
The ever increasing demands on the on-board electronic system in the fields of vehicle safety, comfort,
communications and diagnosis require wider and
wider networking of the existing systems in order to
allow the necessary information to be exchanged. To
provide complete vehicle networking, a number of
control units also function as gateways, i.e. data from
the connected bus systems are relayed by these
control units.
The following data bus systems are used to exchange
the necessary information:
• Controller Area Network (CAN)
• Media Oriented System Transport (MOST)
The network architecture of the CLS-Coupe largely
matches that of the E-Class (model series 212).
Interior CAN (CAN B)
Networking
Overall network
The interior CAN is responsible for data transfer in the
vehicle interior.
Transfer rate 125 kbit/s.
Drivetrain CAN (CAN C)
The drivetrain CAN is responsible for data transfer by
the drive systems.
Transfer rate 500 kbit/s.
Diagnostic CAN (CAN D)
The data link connector can be used to connect an
external tester (e.g. Xentry Diagnostics) to the diagnostic CAN.
Transfer rate 500 kbit/s.
Chassis CAN (CAN E)
The chassis CAN is responsible for data transfer by the
chassis and suspension systems.
Transfer rate 500 kbit/s.
CAN
The CAN is an electrical bus system that transmits
data over two lines.
Each connected control unit can send or receive data
(bidirectional bus). A data protocol defines the individual data blocks and specifies which data can be
received or transmitted by a control unit. Any errors
detected are saved and stored in the fault memory.
The following CAN buses are involved in the overall
network:
Telematics CAN (CAN A)
The telematics CAN is responsible for data transfer by
the telecommunications systems.
Transfer rate 125 kbit/s.
Front end CAN (CAN G)
The front end CAN is responsible for data transfer by
the front light systems in vehicles with xenon headlamps.
Transfer rate 500 kbit/s.
Vehicle dynamics CAN (CAN H)
The vehicle dynamics CAN is responsible for data
transfer of the vehicle dynamic data, e.g. the turn rate
or longitudinal acceleration.
Transfer rate 500 kbit/s.
Drivetrain sensor CAN (CAN I)
The drivetrain sensor CAN is responsible for data
transfer at the exhaust system.
Transfer rate 500 kbit/s.

MOST
Fuses
MOST is an optical networking system. Data are
transmitted via fiber optic cables between the
connected information, navigation and communications components.
Transfer rate 22 MBit/s.
Mini and standard flat pin fuses are used. They are
located in the following positions on the vehicle so
that they are accessible to the customer:
Front SAM control unit with fuse and relay
module with central gateway function
One innovation is the integration of the central
gateway with the front SAM control unit with fuse
and relay module in a single housing. Both control
units feature separate microprocessors, each with
a dedicated CAN interface.
Wiring harnesses
The wiring harnesses for the interior compartment,
cockpit and engine compartment are designed
customer-specifically. The wiring harness variants
result from the basic standard equipment, the
engine type, special equipment and national
versions.
• In the front fuse and relay box (SRB) in the
engine compartment
• In the rear fuse and relay box (SRB) in the trunk
• In the cockpit fuse box (equipment-dependent)
Mega, midi and strip fuses are located in the
prefuse box and cannot be replaced. The fuse box
can only be replaced in its entirety.
The prefuse box contains a pyrofuse that isolates
the starter and alternator line from the battery in
the event of a crash.
On vehicles with ECO start/stop function, the
starter wiring harness is isolated by a pyrofuse on
the battery terminal in the event of a crash.
The wiring harnesses in the interior compartment
are routed through the frame floor system in an
H-shape and are protected by cable ducts in special
areas.

Energy management
Energy management
The energy management system manages the supply
and consumption of electrical energy. The aim is to
ensure that the engine can be started and that all
electrical consumers receive a reliable power supply.
This is achieved through the major assembly coordinator and on-board electrical system management subsystems.
Major assembly coordinator
The major assembly coordinator is integrated in the
CDI control unit (with diesel engine) or in the MESFI [ME] control unit (with gasoline engine) and
forms the interface of the on-board electrical system management to the alternator. The CDI or MESFI [ME] control unit communicates with the alternator via the drive train LIN (LIN C1). The major
assembly coordinator regulates the power output of
the alternator in accordance with the instructions of
the on-board electrical system management, taking
the engine load into account. The following components record and evaluate the variables required for
this:
• Rear SAM control unit
• CDI control unit or ME-SFI [ME] control unit
• Alternator
On-board electrical system management
The on-board electrical system management monitors the on-board electrical system load and
actively intervenes in the energy balance in order to
ensure that the engine can be started and that all
electrical consumers receive a reliable power
supply.
The rear SAM control unit operates as the master
control unit for energy management.
The energy management system comprises the
following subsystems:
• Driving operation energy management
• Engine standstill energy management
• Engine start/stop function energy management
(with (code B03) ECO start/stop function)
Driving operation energy management
The driving operation energy management
subsystem ensures that the on-board electrical
system remains stable and guarantees an equalized
charge balance of the on-board electrical system
battery.
Due to the rpm and temperature-dependent power
output of the alternator with simultaneous operation of many consumers, load situations may arise
which have to be buffered by the on-board electrical
system battery. If this situation is ongoing or if the
on-board electrical system battery has a low
charging capability, this can result in a negative
charge balance. This can mean that the vehicle is
not able to be started.
The driving operation energy management
subsystem increases the power output of the alternator if the on-board electrical system is overloaded on an ongoing basis. Alternatively, the
power consumption of comfort-related consumers
can be scaled back to achieve an equalized charge
balance of the on-board electrical system battery.
Energy management is mainly performed by the
following components:
•
•
•
•
•
Battery sensor
On-board electrical system battery
Alternator
CDI control unit or ME-SFI [ME] control unit
Rear SAM control unit with fuse and relay
module
• ECO start/stop function additional battery (with

72
b Introduction of the New CLS-Class, Model Series 218 Coupe
– This printout will not be recorded by the update service. Status: 09 / 2010 –
The driving operation energy management
subsystem is divided into the following subfunctions:
• Voltage control
- Determine battery charge level
- Charge on-board electrical system battery
- Alternator control
• Dynamic idle control
• Consumer reduction
Engine standstill energy management
The engine standstill energy management
subsystem ensures that the on-board electrical
system remains stable and that the vehicle can be
started after the engine has been switched off.
This functionality is integrated in the rear SAM
control unit and allows the on-board electrical
system battery to remain idle for long periods.
The engine standstill energy management
subsystem consists of the following subfunctions:
• Consumer shutoff
• No-load current management
• External charging/jump starting
No-load current management
The no-load current management function ensures
that the vehicle can be started.
This function is integrated in the rear SAM control
unit and allows the vehicle to remain idle for
extended periods without the on-board electrical
system battery discharging completely.
Networking
Energy management
For this purpose, consumers on circuit 30g are
disconnected from the power supply through actuation of the no-load current shutoff relay.
The no-load current management function allows
increased energy consumption for a certain period
of time after the engine is shut off (max.
t = 75 min). This is desirable, for example, when the
radio is left switched on while the car is being
washed.
External charging/jump starting
If the on-board electrical system battery does not
have sufficient capacity to start the engine, it must
be charged or a jump start must be carried out.
Consumer shutoff
Consumer shutoff is activated when the on-board
electrical system voltage drops below U = 11.8 V or
when the engine is off (circuit 61 OFF) and circuit
15 ON is switched to circuit 15R ON In addition to
consumer reduction from the driving operation
energy management subsystem, a consumer is
shut off every t = 5 s.
When the on-board electrical system voltage stabilizes at a value above U = 11.8 V, the consumer
shutoff function is nevertheless not canceled. The
consumers which have been shut off are only put
back into operation after the system is reset by
turning the transmitter key to circuit 15C.
i Note
During the jump starting process or during testing
work in the workshop, one of the front doors must
be opened. The alternator management system
thus switches to jump starting or workshop mode
and the alternator voltage is raised to U = 13.9 V.
i Note
The on-board electrical system battery may only
be charged with direct current. Approx. 10% of the
capacity is recommended as the charging current.

Energy management
Engine start/stop function energy management
When the vehicle is stationary, the engine start/
stop function automatically switches the engine off
and restarts it as soon as the driver is ready to move
off.
i Note
The on-board electrical system battery is decoupled from the on-board electrical system by the
ECO start/stop function diode. The additional
battery is connected by actuating the ECO start/
stop function additional battery electronic relay.
The following function requirements must be met:
• Engine running and at operating temperature
• Engine hood closed
• Speed of v = 15 km/h exceeded once during
forward travel
• System diagnosis complete
• Outside temperature T = -10 to 40 °C
• Battery temperature T = 0 to 60 °C
• Set air conditioning temperature reached
The CDI control unit (with diesel engine) or ME-SFI
[ME] control unit (with gasoline engine) operates as
the master control unit, recording and evaluating all
variables.
The use of the ECO start/stop function additional
battery with a capacity of 12 Ah prevents a voltage
dip during engine starting. The additional battery
thus takes over power supply to the active
consumers, while the on-board electrical system
battery is disconnected from the on-board electrical system during engine starting. This means
that active comfort functions are not switched off.
After the engine is cold started, the CDI or ME-SFI
[ME] control unit performs a system diagnosis and
evaluates the operational capability of the start/
stop function. In addition, the front SAM control
unit checks the operation of the components for
decoupling the on-board electrical system battery
and connecting the additional battery.
74
The engine start/stop function is made up of the
following subfunctions:
•
•
•
•
•
Engine stop
Engine start
Forced engine start
Determine status of additional battery
Charge additional battery
Engine stop
The CDI or ME-SFI [ME] control unit checks the
information provided by the rear SAM control unit
about the condition of the on-board electrical
system, the on-board electrical system battery, the
additional battery and the requirements of loadintensive consumers (e.g. air conditioning). After
evaluation of all of the relevant data, the engine
stop is enabled and the engine is shut off.
After an engine stop, a maximum of three engine
starts without exceeding the speed threshold of
v = 8 km/h in forward travel are permitted.
b Introduction of the New CLS-Class, Model Series 218 Coupe
– This printout will not be recorded by the update service. Status: 09 / 2010 –
Forced engine start
i Note
When the blower for automatic air conditioning is
active, the blower output is reduced. At warm
ambient temperatures, the system switches to air
recirculation mode depending on the specified
temperature setting.
Engine start
The CDI or ME-SFI [ME] control unit evaluates all of
the relevant variables and issues the start enable
signal (warm start signal). The front SAM control
unit reads in this signal and actuates the ECO start/
stop function diode in the front fuse box and the
ECO start/stop function additional battery relay on
the additional battery.
The additional battery is connected to the on-board
electrical system. Then, the ECO start/stop function diode disconnects the on-board electrical
system battery from the on-board electrical system
for the duration of the starting procedure. The
energy demands of the on-board electrical system
are then met by the additional battery and the onboard electrical system battery supplies the energy
required to start the engine.
In order to ensure the stability of the on-board electrical system even with the engine at a standstill,
the CDI or ME-SFI [ME] control unit can initiate a
forced engine start.
Networking
Energy management
A forced engine start is carried out if the stability of
the on-board electrical system can no longer be
guaranteed due to the requirements of load-intensive consumers. Load-intensive consumers can be
requested by the following systems:
• Supplemental restraint systems
• PRE-SAFE®
• Brake Assist System and distance control
systems
• Air conditioning
• Steering
If the on-board electrical system management
detects possible instability of the on-board electrical system, the rear SAM control unit transmits
an engine start request via the front SAM control
unit to the CDI or ME-SFI [ME] control unit, which
initiates the engine start. If the stability of the onboard electrical system is still not ensured after
this, the engine is no longer shut off and the start/
stop function is shut off.
As soon as the CDI or ME-SFI [ME] control unit
detects an engine speed of n = 400 to 700 rpm, it
terminates the starting procedure and transmits a
corresponding signal to the front SAM control unit.
The on-board electrical system battery is then
reconnected to the on-board electrical system and
it takes over the task of supplying the energy
demands of the on-board electrical system. The
additional battery is then disconnected from the onboard electrical system.

Determine status of additional battery
Charge additional battery
After the engine is started, the front SAM control
unit carries out the process of battery state recognition. This supplies information about the availability of electrical power from the additional
battery. In addition, the voltage at the additional
battery is tested after every engine start in start/
stop function mode.
The charging strategy of the additional battery is
determined by two requirements. On the one hand,
the system must ensure that the additional battery
is sufficiently charged and, on the other hand, the
number of actuations of the additional battery relay
and the resulting load on the additional battery
must be minimized as far as possible.
The ECO start/stop function additional battery
relay is no longer actuated under the following
conditions:
When the open circuit voltage (U > 12.5 V) of the
additional battery drops below the specified value,
the output limitation of the alternator is deactivated
so that the additional battery can be charged.
• Additional battery is deep discharged
• Internal short circuit
• Short circuit in positive line of additional battery
A corresponding fault message is shown on the
multifunction display of the instrument cluster.
If the voltage drop (U < 11 V) during engine starting
is too high, the engine stop function is deactivated
for t = 5 min in order to charge the additional
battery.
The ECO start/stop function is only activated if the
output limitation of the alternator is not active and
the on-board electrical system voltage is high
enough (U > 13 V). It is shut off if the output limitation of the alternator is active or the on-board electrical system is under heavy load.
i Note
Battery state recognition can also be
launched using the diagnostic tester.

Low beams
The low beam actuation request is made by turning
the exterior lights switch to the "Manual driving
lights" position.
The electronic ignition lock control unit transmits
the circuit status to the front SAM control unit.
From there, the request is output to the LED driving
lights actuation modules via a voltage signal. The
LED actuation modules then actuate the low beams
(short and long-range).
High beams
The high beam actuation request is made by
pressing the combination switch forwards.
i Note
The long-range low beams are integrated in the
low beam modules. The position of the shortrange low beams remains unchanged.
i Note
After replacing an LED on full-LED headlamps,
synchronization has to be performed between the
headlamp and headlamp control unit using
XENTRY-Diagnostics.
The steering column tube module control unit reads
in the position of the combination switch directly
and transmits this to the front SAM control unit.
This sends the request "High beams ON" to the
headlamp control units and outputs a voltage signal
to the LED driving lights actuation modules.
The headlamp control units actuate the headlamp
range adjustment actuator motors. The low beam
modules are raised to increase the range of the low

Intelligent Light System (ILS)
Infrared lights
The additional driving lights actuation functions of
the Intelligent Light System enable optimal road
surface illumination in various driving and weather
conditions.
Vehicles with full-LED headlamps can be supplemented with the special equipment option
(code 610) Night View Assist Plus. LEDs are used to
generate the infrared light. The infrared light
emitted by the infrared lamps is not visible to the
human eye. It therefore does not disturb or dazzle
oncoming traffic.
This is achieved by increasing the light output of
individual light sources, selectively actuating additional light sources and through various actuators in
the lamp units. This ensures that other road users
are not inconvenienced or dazzled.
Illumination
Exterior lights
The driving lights (low beams, high beams) remain
active while the additional driving lights functions
are actuated.
The additional driving lights actuation functions
comprise the following subfunctions:
• Cornering lights
• Dynamic curve illumination
• Active light distribution with the subfunctions
motorway lights, extended fog lights and
adaptive high beams (with (code 608) Adaptive
Highbeam Assist)
a Danger!
Extended exposure to infrared radiation can
damage the eyes. This damage is not immediately
noticeable. Observe the following instructions to
ensure that this does not happen:
• Avoid extended visual contact with activated
infrared lamps.
• When working on the front of the vehicle make
sure that the infrared lamps are switched off.

The further developed passive safety system
includes:
Extended safety measures for pedestrians and
cyclists:
• Body structure with front and rear end
constructions with high strain energy, and a
high-strength passenger cell
• A long deformation path due to short 4-cylinder
and 6-cylinder engines mounted on a bolted
frame-type integral support, which absorbs
energy and deforms in the direction of the
impact during a frontal collision
• Multiple parallel load paths at the level of the
longitudinal members for improved load distribution in the event of a partial head-on collision
• Cockpit crossmember made out of extruded
aluminum section between the A-pillars
• Telescoping steering column
• Doors with reinforcement profiles
• Steering wheel with foamed rim
• Airbag and seat belt restraint systems
• PRE-SAFE® preventive occupant protection
system
• Soft nose front end as an extended protective
measure for pedestrians and cyclists
• Emergency illumination after an accident
Reducing the severity of an accident is important
particularly in the case of collisions with weaker
road users such as pedestrians and cyclists, as
these weaker road users have no crumple zones of
their own.
Safety
Passive safety
To supplement the active safety measures (the
Brake Assist System, for instance), which prevent
an accident from occurring or which can help to
reduce its severity, the passive measures for pedestrian protection have been optimized even further in
model series 218.
For example, in order to reduce the stresses which
occur in the event of an impact with the engine
hood of the vehicle, the front end of the vehicle has
a "soft nose" design. The upper area of the bumper
and radiator grille are offset forwards accordingly
and have a soft design.

General
Multifunction camera
Modern assistance systems effectively contribute
towards accident avoidance. This was the result of
analyses carried out by Mercedes-Benz based on
representative data from accident research and the
evaluation of real-life accidents.
A multifunction camera is installed in model series
218 to control the various driving assistance systems.
The multifunction camera is located below the inside
rearview mirror on the windshield.
On average, these technologies could help to prevent
one fifth of all rear-end collisions involving passenger
cars in Germany alone. The accident figures on freeways could be reduced by as much as 36%.
The following systems are controlled:
• Adaptive Highbeam Assist
• Speed Limit Assist
• Automatic lane recognition and Active Lane
Keeping Assist
Driving assistance systems
Overview of systems
The input variables and signals are read in by the
multifunction camera via the chassis CAN.
The integrated microprocessor evaluates the input
variables and signals, and the relevant components
are then actuated over the chassis CAN.
The multifunction camera records images of the scene
in front of the vehicle. The image recognition module
recognizes the input signals of the camera, such as
other road users, road signs and lane markings. The
decision module compiles all the relevant data, such
as references to other road users, their distance and
angle, the vehicle's current environment and the
current vehicle parameters. It then issues the appropriate requests, e.g. control of the headlamps, actuation of the instrument cluster or control of the vibration motor in the steering wheel.
i Note
All the driving assistance systems are merely aids
for the driver in controlling the vehicle in certain
difficult situations.
They can never replace a properly relaxed and
attentive driver. The driver bears sole responsibility at all times for the safety of his vehicle and
its behavior.
i Note
If the multifunction camera is removed or the
windshield is replaced, the camera must be calibrated using Xentry Diagnostics.

Driving assistance systems
Adaptive Highbeam Assist
The adaptive high beams assistant with (code 608) is
available as special equipment in combination with
full-LED headlamps with Intelligent Light System.
The headlamp range of the driving lights is adjusted to
the distance of the nearest vehicle in front or nearest
oncoming road user by actuating various actuators in
the front lamp units. If no road users are detected, the
adaptive high beams assistant automatically activates
the high beams.
The status indicator for the automatic high beams
including optical headlamp range adjustment appears
in the instrument cluster in the form of an indicator
symbol on the multifunction display in addition to the
familiar blue indicator lamp for the high beams.
The multifunction camera on the windshield ensures
that the headlamp range and the light cone are
controlled so as to provide optimum illumination of
the road according to the traffic situation (optical
headlamp range adjustment). The transitions between
the low beams and high beams are smoothly overlapped with no sudden light changes.
The adaptive high beams assistant function is activated via the control menu level on the instrument
cluster. When the exterior lights switch is in position
"A", the multifunction camera has detected darkness
and the vehicle speed is > 40 km/h, the adaptive high
beams assistant can be switched on by pressing the
combination switch to position "High beams".

The Speed Limit Assist function, which is available as
special equipment with (code 513), uses the multifunction camera to record the speed limit for the
section of road the vehicle is driving on as indicated by
the road signs. The multifunction camera also records
supplementary signs and derestriction signs. In addition, the verified attributes in the digital map of the
navigation system are also evaluated.
On the CLS-Class, the corresponding road signs are
shown for the first time in color on the multifunction
display and Audio/COMAND display.
Speed Limit Assist is permanently active in the background.
Image recognition
The decision module processes the following relevant
data:
• The vehicle's surroundings registered by the
multifunction camera
• Speed and yaw rate
• Attributes of the navigation system from the digital
road map (e.g. type of road)
When the data has been evaluated, the multifunction
camera sends a corresponding request to control the
display of the currently detected speed limit to the
instrument cluster.
It is operated via the menu "Speed Limit" on the instrument cluster.
The multifunction camera even combines the speed
limit information into a result if the information is
contradictory.
National legislation governing the design and installation of traffic signs is taken into account by the
system. The image recognition module assigns
degrees of probability to all the results and forwards
these on to the integrated software modules.
If one of the data sources (image recognition, vehicle
data or navigation data) fails, Speed Limit Assist is
temporarily unavailable. The function is deactivated if
a control unit fails.

The attention assistance system is installed as standard on the new model series 218. It detects tiredness
or increasing inattentiveness (e.g. during long monotonous freeway and highway driving) in the speed
range of v = 80 to 180 km/h.
Operator intervention at one of the following controls
disables the detection of steering patterns:
• All controls on the steering column tube module
• Steering wheel buttons
• All controls on the head unit
If the attention assistance system detects signs which
indicate that the driver is tired or increasingly inattentive, the driver is prompted to take a break through the
output of visual and acoustic warning messages.
The attention assistance system is switched on via the
"Assist." menu in the "Attention Asst." menu level on
the instrument cluster. A coffee cup symbol is
displayed on the multifunction display.
Driving assistance systems
Attention assistance system
During the driving states listed below, steering
patterns are recorded which occur more frequently as
the driver becomes increasingly tired or inattentive:
• Monotonous journey
(little longitudinal and lateral acceleration)
• No noteworthy external stimulation
(e.g. surface undulations or crosswind)
Under the following conditions, operation of the attention assistance system is limited and warnings are not
issued or issued with a delay:
• On rough road surfaces (e.g. heavy service
undulations, pot holes)
• In strong crosswind
• When driving in a sporty style with high cornering
speeds or rapid acceleration
• At speeds which are generally slower than
80 km/h or faster than 180 km/h
• When the audio system is being operated,
including telephony
• During active driving situations e.g. changing lane
or vehicle speed
i Note
The driving behavior is also analyzed when the
attention assistance system is switched off. If the
system is switched on while driving, then the
entire trip from the beginning is thus taken into
account.
i Note
The software used to analyze driving behavior is
based on experience with testers whose different
driving behavior was evaluated during the day and
night.

Driving assistance systems
Attention assistance system
At the start of a trip, the algorithm determines a
warning threshold for the individual driver. The
sensitivity of this algorithm adjusts to the driving
time and time of day.
If the warning threshold is exceeded, the system
prompts the driver to take a break with the
message "Attention Assist: Pause!" on the
multifunction display of the instrument cluster. In
addition, an acoustic warning is output via the
warning buzzer in the instrument cluster.
The warning message can be acknowledged using
the "OK" button on the left multifunction steering
wheel button group. A new warning message can
then only be issued after t > 15 min at the earliest.
Special operating notes
The following factors can affect correct operation of
the system:
No warning due to insufficient driving time in
active speed range
The attention assistance system analyses the
development of driving behavior over time. The individual driving behavior is classified at the start of a
trip. If the driving behavior changes on an ongoing
basis, a warning is output. If the driving time in the
active range (speed between 80 and 180 km/h) is
too short, no warning is issued.
No warning due to system limitations
Even in the active range, the system is not able to
evaluate driving behavior if certain circumstances
occur e.g. frequent lane changes, twisty roads,
frequent control operations, surface undulations or
a dynamic driving style. If these factors occur
continuously, the driving time in the active range is
too short.
94
Individual factors related to driving situation or
driving behavior
The attention assistance system detects changes in
driving behavior. However, these changes are not
necessarily caused by tiredness or inattentiveness.
They can also be caused by the peculiarities of a
driver's individual driving style.
Influence of time of day
The attention assistance system responds more
sensitively depending on the time of day in accordance with a curve which, for example, also reflects
the "afternoon slump" (biorhythm). These findings
have been determined based on a representative
study, but may be different in individual cases.
Influence of driving time
The attention assistance system responds with
increasing sensitivity as the driving time without a
break increases. The weighting of the driving time is
based on studies and corresponds to average tiredness patterns.
Warning due to distraction or slight tiredness
A driver's subjective feeling of tiredness and the
objective evaluation criteria determined by the
system may differ. However, the attention assistance system not only warns in the event of tiredness, but also if there is a significant change in
driving style e.g. due to major distraction. In this
case, a warning is issued due to increasing inattentiveness.
Change in driving behavior due to other factors
An increasingly slippery, narrow or rough road
surface or deteriorating visibility can change driving
behavior on an ongoing basis and influence the
objective evaluation criteria determined by the
system.

Automatic lane recognition with (code 476)
The automatic lane recognition function detects
when the vehicle unintentionally drives over lane
markings and warns the driver in certain situations
through vibrations at the steering wheel.
Automatic lane recognition is activated in the
"Assistance" menu on the instrument cluster.
The status indicator on the instrument cluster lights
up yellow when the system is switched on but not
yet ready to issue warnings. As soon as the system
is ready to issue warnings, the status indicator
lights up green.
Assistance is provided by the automatic lane recognition function in the speed range of 60 to
270 km/h. An additional prerequisite is a lane
width of 2.5 to 4.6 m and a curve radius of
r > 150 m. The automatic lane recognition function
monitors the area in front of the vehicle using the
multifunction camera. The system takes measurements of the lane markings on the road. From the
recorded image sequences and the measurements
of the road markings it calculates the position of the
vehicle within the lane and the path of the lane
itself.
If there are multiple markings on the road, the
innermost marking acts as the reference point. On
the basis of this data, the multifunction camera can
determine whether the driver is crossing a lane
marking.
When the automatic lane recognition function
detects that one of the front wheels is touching or
crossing a lane marking, it warns the driver that he
or she is leaving the lane unintentionally. The
warning is given by actuating a vibration motor in
the steering wheel which provides the driver with a
haptic warning by intermittently vibrating the
steering wheel.
Driving assistance systems
Automatic lane recognition
Suppression of the warning
Under the following conditions, the system detects
that the vehicle is crossing a lane marking but
output of a warning message is suppressed:
• When turn signaling
• During driver activities, through evaluation of
steering wheel movements, braking requests
and accelerator pedal position
• During sporty cornering (cutting corners)
• During active control interventions by braking

Active Lane Keeping Assist
Active Lane Keeping Assist with (code 238)
i Note
Active Lane Keeping Assist incorporates the functions of automatic lane recognition.
Brake system interventions are only ever carried
out if:
However, if the driver does not respond to the
warning in the form of steering wheel vibrations, the
video and radar sensor system control unit initiates
targeted brake system interventions – if the relevant prerequisites are met – to move the vehicle
back into the lane within the lane markings.
• The system detects that a clearly visible,
continuous line is driven over
• The Electronic Stability Program has not been
switched to passive mode
• Run-flat mode (tires) is not active
As with Lane Keeping Assist, warnings are issued at
a speed of 60 to 270 km/h. However, brake system
interventions are only made between 60 and
200 km/h.
The lane width required for a warning is 2.5 to
4.6 m, for a brake system intervention a lane width
of 2.6 to 4.4 m is required. Warnings are not issued
for lane widths over 3.9 m where the vehicle is traveling at a speed of v < 100 km/h.
i Note
Brake interventions are only performed when
the vehicle crosses over a continuous line
(lane delimitation) at an angle of less than 3° and
only if the lane is delimited by two lane markings.
On the other hand, a warning is issued even when
the vehicle crosses over a broken line.
If the driver indicates to the system that he or she
is "active" before or during the brake intervention,
the brake intervention is suppressed or aborted.
The brake intervention of the Active Lane Keeping
Assist system is also suppressed or immediately
aborted if the video and radar sensor system
control unit detects activities from the following
systems in the form of brake intervention requests:
•
•
•
•
•

sensor system control unit uses a set algorithm to
decide whether and with which intensity a lanecorrecting brake system intervention should be
carried out.
The request is transmitted via chassis CAN to the
multifunction camera. After positive verification
against the data of the multifunction camera, the
video and radar sensor system control unit transmits a corresponding signal via vehicle dynamics
CAN to the Electronic Stability Program control
unit. This initiates the required wheel-selective
brake interventions, which are implemented by the
traction systems hydraulic unit.

Blind Spot Assist
Blind Spot Assist with (code 234)
The Blind Spot Assist system serves to prevent accidents and supports the driver in safely carrying out
a lane change. The Blind Spot Assist system monitors the blind spot, i.e. the area to the side of the
vehicle behind the driver (see picture: Blind Spot
Assist monitoring range). If there is a vehicle in the
blind spot, the driver is visually notified that the
intended lane change is not recommended.
In the left and right outside mirrors, a readiness and
warning indicator indicates that the system is active
or if there is a vehicle in the blind spot. If the driver
actuates the turn signal in the direction of a vehicle
in the blind spot, an acoustic warning is also issued.
The area which is not visible via the outside mirrors
and inside rearview mirror is monitored by the left
and right short-range radar sensors in the rear
bumper.
All relevant data are evaluated directly by the radar
sensors, whereby the right radar sensor requests
readiness and warning message output.
Warnings are issued visually via the readiness and
warning indicator in the left or right outside mirror
and acoustically via the warning buzzer in the
instrument cluster.

Active Blind Spot Assist with (code 237)
Active Blind Spot Assist builds upon the functionality of Blind Spot Assist. Active Blind Spot Assist
can additionally initiate course-correcting brake
system interventions if the risk of a side collision is
detected.
Before and during a course-correcting brake system
intervention, the area in front of and to the side of
the vehicle is monitored additionally so that the
course-correcting brake system intervention can be
adjusted to the current traffic situation. For this
purpose, the movements of all vehicles, particularly
oncoming vehicles, and stationary obstacles in the
vicinity of the vehicle are monitored and evaluated.
The course-correcting brake system interventions
take place on a wheel-selective basis and effect a
change in course of the vehicle with the system.
Noticeable course-correcting brake system interventions are indicated to the driver on the instrument cluster. In addition, the driver is warned visually and acoustically, as with the passive Blind Spot
Assist system.
The evaluation of all data for the Active Blind Spot
Assist system is carried out by the video and radar
sensor system control unit. If the video and radar
sensor system control unit detects imminent
danger of a side collision with a vehicle in the blind
spot, a course-correcting brake system intervention
is requested via the Premium Electronic Stability
Program control unit. This selectively brakes individual wheels and guides the vehicle back onto a
collision-free course.
Driving assistance systems
Blind Spot Assist
The course-correcting brake system intervention is
aborted if the driver steers against the direction of
the course-correcting brake system intervention or
the vehicle accelerates.
Furthermore, the driving assistance systems and
driving safety systems such as ABS, ASR, BAS, ESP
and PRE-SAFE® brake have priority over the Active
Blind Spot Assist system.
If a risk of side collision is detected with vehicles
that are in the blind spot, then an accident can thus
be avoided or the consequences of an accident
lessened.
The area which cannot be observed via the outside
mirrors and inside rearview mirror is monitored by
the following sensors:
• Left outer radar sensor, rear bumper
• Right outer radar sensor, rear bumper
The following sensors monitor the area in front:
• Left inner short-range radar sensor, front

The parking system uses the familiar PARKTRONIC
distance warning system to record the distance
between the vehicle and an obstacle (with
(code 220) PARKTRONIC and (code 498) Japan
version).
On vehicles with Active Parking Assist (except
(code 498) Japan version), parallel parking spaces
are additionally measured and stored on both sides
of the vehicle in the direction of travel while driving
at speeds of v < 36 km/h. The vehicle can be
parked semi-automatically at the request of the
driver.
In addition, the following subfunctions have been
added to the system:
• Parking space detection
• Display of possible parking spaces
• Semi-automatic parking
The parking system distance sensors are actuated
by the parking system control unit. These then
output an ultrasound signal. The signal reflected by
an obstacle is received and evaluated. The driver is
warned about the respective distance between the
vehicle and obstacle via the instrument panel
parking system warning indicator and rear parking
system warning indicator. The distance sensors are
activated according to the direction of travel.
On vehicles with Active Park Assist, the parking
space detection area to the right and left of the
vehicle is scanned up to a distance of s = 400 to
450 cm at speeds below 36 km/h. The data is
stored as the vehicle continues to drive up to a
distance of s = 15 m.

Additional function requirements for
parking space detection
In addition to the PARKTRONIC function requirements, parking space detection only becomes
active if there has been no intervention by the ABS
or ESP system in the last t = 5 s.
i Note
At a speed range of 0 to 18 km/h, the parking
system involves mixed operation of the
PARKTRONIC function and Active Parking Assist
function. As of a speed of 18 km/h, the parking
system switches to the parking space detection
function and remains active up to 36 km/h.
Parking space detection
The parking space detection function is used for
locating suitable parallel parking spaces. The outer
front distance sensors monitor the area to the left
and right of the vehicle. The maximum range of the
front distance sensors is between 400 and 450 cm
depending on environmental influences.
The data from the front distance sensors are read in
and evaluated by the parking system control unit.
The stored vehicle dimensions and the measurements of the recorded parking space are used to
calculate whether the parking space is suitable for
the vehicle. For a parking space to be detected by
the parking system, it must be parallel to the direction of travel and at least 150 cm wider and 130 cm
longer than the vehicle.
i Note
The parking system can detect a free space that is
geometrically suitable for parking; it cannot tell
whether this free space is actually a parking
space.
Display of parking spaces
When the parking system is looking for a parking
space, this is indicated by a "P" symbol on the
instrument cluster. As soon as a suitable parking
space is detected, a directional arrow appears next
to this symbol to indicate on which side of the
vehicle the parking space is located.
Parking spaces are always looked for on both sides
of the vehicle. However, only parking spaces on the
passenger side are pointed out by default. To also
allow parking spaces on the driver side to be
displayed, the driver must actuate the turn signal in
the appropriate direction.

Driving assistance systems
Active Parking Assist
The message "Activate parking assistant?" appears
on the multifunction display of the instrument
cluster.
After the respective gear change is made, accelerator and brake pedal actuation has to be continued
until the end position is reached.
Alongside the warning message "Pay attention to
surroundings", the option to activate the parking
assistant appears in the lower section of the multifunction display. The steering column tube module
control unit reads in confirmation from the multifunction steering wheel button group over the
steering LIN (LIN E1) via the steering wheel electronics and transmits the corresponding request to
the parking system control unit via chassis CAN.
As soon as this end position is reached, the
message "Parking assistance complete – Please
take over" appears for a period of t = 5 s, accompanied by a warning tone.
Semi-automatic parking
Once the Park Assist function has been activated,
the message "Please accelerate and brake independently" appears on the multifunction display. The
driver can now take his or her hands off the steering
wheel and actuate the accelerator and brake pedal.
The Park Assist system is active up to a speed of
10 km/h. To implement the function, the parking
system control unit transmits appropriate steering
commands to the electric power steering (ES)
control unit via the chassis CAN. For this purpose,
it calculates the corresponding steering angle
based on the size of the parking space detected and
the data from the steering angle sensor.
The ES control unit actuates the ES actuator motor
of the ES electromechanical controller unit, which
implements the corresponding steering movements
via the steering gear.
If the vehicle reaches a distance of s < 30 cm to the
edge of the parking space (at front or rear), this is
indicated by the first red LED lighting up on the
parking system warning indicator. At the same
time, the message "Please engage gear range D" or
"Please engage gear range R" appears on the multifunction display.
104
The following circumstances result in deactivation
of the system and thus cancellation of active
parking assistance:
• The permissible speed of v = 10 km/h is
exceeded
• The ES control unit detects active steering wheel
intervention by the driver
• A defect is detected in the electric power
steering electromechanical controller unit
• Controller Area Network (CAN) signals are faulty
• The driver door and driver seat belt buckle are
open simultaneously
If the system is deactivated due to the aforementioned circumstances, it can only be reactivated by
changing the gear range. If the vehicle is already
outside of the calculated driving route, it must be
manually guided into a starting position from which
a new driving route can be calculated.
Alignment in the parking space
Delimitation at the side of the parking space is
established by a recognized obstacle e.g. a curb or
pole. If a lateral obstacle is not recognized, the
vehicle is aligned flush to the front or rear obstacle.
If the vehicle is positioned in the parking space on
an angle, this is corrected by the parking system
with a maximum of five maneuvers. The wheels are
straightened once the parking procedure is
completed.

The Night View Assist system with (code 610)
provides a visual representation of the road in darkness, with the aim of identifying people, obstructions or other objects before they become visible in
the light cone of the conventional driving lights.
The Night View Assist system is activated by
pressing the Night View Assist button beside the
rotary light switch. In addition, the following function requirements must be fulfilled and registered
by the Night View Assist control unit:
• Rain/light sensor detects twilight or night
• Exterior lights switch in position "A" or " Manual
driving lights"
• Reverse gear not engaged
• Vehicle speed v < 260 km/h
"Intelligent Nightview"
With the advanced "Intelligent Nightview" function
(night view with pedestrian detection), pedestrians
on dark country roads outside urban areas can be
detected by the system. Detected pedestrians are
highlighted by frame corners on the Audio/
COMAND display. Pedestrians can be detected at
ranges up to 90 m in front of the vehicle.
In addition to the function requirements listed
above, a prerequisite for night vision with pedestrian detection is that the multifunction camera
behind the windshield, which is located to the left
side of the Night View Assist camera, must register
darkness.
Driving assistance systems
Night View Assist
Depending on the ambient brightness, the Night
View Assist system makes a distinction between
the two operating modes of twilight mode and night
mode.
In twilight mode, only the images recorded by the
Night View Assist camera are displayed on the
Audio/COMAND display.
In night mode, the left infrared light and right
infrared light in the respective front lamp units are
additionally switched on as of a vehicle speed of
v > 15 km/h. LEDs are used to generate the
infrared light. The road in front of the vehicle is illuminated with infrared light up to a distance of
150 m.
The picture from the infrared camera is displayed as
a black/white video image in the audio/COMAND

Reversing camera with (code 218) with
(code 498) Japan version
The reversing camera system is a visual aid and
assists the driver when reverse parking and when
backing up the car.
Japan-version vehicles are equipped with an
expanded reversing camera system. Power is
supplied by the reversing camera control unit.
The reversing camera system can be activated and
deactivated via the COMAND controller unit. In the
system settings, "Autom. on in reverse gear" must
be selected for this purpose.
In the system for Japan, the reversing camera
control unit superimposes guidelines over the video
pictures output in the audio/COMAND display.
With the aid of these lines the driver can maneuver
the vehicle until he has reached the desired parking
position.
If the COMAND controller unit is switched off and
reverse gear is then engaged, the COMAND
controller unit is woken and images from the
reversing camera are transferred.
If another gear range is then selected, the COMAND
controller unit switches to the audio mode last
selected before the audio equipment was switched
off.
The reversing camera power supply module
provides the reversing camera with power. The
pictures taken by the reversing camera are sent as
a Composite Video Baseband Signal (CVBS) over
the reversing camera power supply module to the
COMAND controller unit.
The COMAND controller unit then activates the
Audio/COMAND display over the telematics CAN
(CAN A). The pictures taken from the reversing
camera are then sent directly via the low voltage
differential signal (LVDS) line to the Audio/
COMAND display and output there.
The reversing camera system is automatically
switched on when gear range "R" is engaged if the
reversing camera function has been activated in the
COMAND controller unit. The central operating unit
then provides two parking modes to choose from,
for which guidelines are superimposed on the
picture. The mode that was active the last time the
car was reversed is displayed as the default. The
following options can be selected:
• Right angle parking (reverse parking)
• Lengthwise parking (parallel parking)
Voice assistance can be activated when parallel
parking.
The images recorded by the reversing camera are
read in and processed as CVBS signals by the
reversing camera control unit. It also makes calculations based on the steering angle and the stored
vehicle guideline parameters, which are shown on
the pictures taken. The processed images are transferred to the COMAND controller unit as CVBS
signals and from there to the Audio/COMAND
display over the LVDS line.
i Note (Japan version only)
When performing initial startup/work on the
reversing camera or work on the trunk lid, the
reversing camera control unit must be recalibrated with the diagnostic tester.

The DISTRONIC PLUS driver assistance system
(code 233) automatically regulates the vehicle
speed and distance to the vehicle in front as specified by the driver in the speed range of v = 0 to
200 km/h and v = 200 to 0 km/h.
®
The PRE-SAFE brake continuously evaluates the
risk of a rear-end collision and, in critical situations,
initiates appropriate measures for collision warning
and, if necessary, to reduce the severity of the collision.
The BAS PLUS function (Brake Assist System
PLUS), assists the driver through situation-dependent, targeted brake force calculation during emergency braking.
DISTRONIC PLUS
DISTRONIC PLUS uses the short-range radar
sensor system integrated in the bumper and the
long-range radar installed in the radiator grille in
order to detect vehicles and obstacles ahead of the
vehicle.
The DISTRONIC PLUS functions are controlled by
the video and radar sensor system control unit,
which actively intervenes in the engine control
system and brake system for this purpose. In addition, it controls the instrument cluster to output
visual and acoustic warning messages.
When the vehicle leaves the protected zone, the
short-range radar sensor system is switched back
on. If DISTRONIC PLUS is active, the message
"DISTRONIC PLUS available again" is displayed.
In vehicles for Australia, the radar sensor system
must be manually switched off and back on via the
onboard computer.
The long-range radar operates in the 77 GHz
frequency range, and at a detection angle of 18°,
monitors the area in front of the vehicle up to a
distance of 60 to 200 m. The area from 0 to 60 m in
front of the vehicle is monitored at an angle of 60°.
Driving assistance systems
DISTRONIC PLUS including BAS PLUS and PRE-SAFE® brake
The long-range radar operates using the PulseDoppler principle. This allows distances and speeds
of individual objects to measured independently of
each other.
The maximum positive acceleration for automatic
distance control which can be requested by the
system is limited to approx. 2.5 m/s2 for safety and
comfort-related reasons, the negative acceleration
is limited to 40% of the maximum possible braking
power.
Due to legal requirements related to the 24-GHz
radar system, the short-range radar sensor system
is shut off in certain protected zones around radio
astronomy stations. The protected zones are stored
in the video and radar sensor system control unit in
the form of Global Positioning System (GPS) coordinates.
The current GPS coordinates received by the navigation system are transmitted via the front SAM
control unit to the video and radar sensor system
control unit. This shuts off the short-range radar
sensor system when the vehicle is in a protected
zone.
If DISTRONIC PLUS is active, the message "Radar
sensor system autom. shut off see operating
instructions" is displayed on the multifunction
display.

Automatic distance control
As an additional function requirement for automatic
distance control, the cruise control lever must be in
the DISTRONIC PLUS position and a target object
(vehicle in front) must have been detected by the
radar sensor system.
As soon as the target object has been detected, the
distance selected with the DISTRONIC control is
realized. The distance to the target object can be
set in seven steps between approx. t = 1.0 and
2.0 s.
The time specifications for the specified distance
refer to the distance which the vehicle covers at a
certain speed. The distance to the target object is
displayed in metric units on the multifunction
display and should be at least 50% of the displayed
speed value.when
If the target vehicle accelerates to over
v = 200 km/h or leaves the detection range of the
radar sensor system, the automatic distance
control function switches over to the automatic
speed control function. The vehicle is set to the
speed chosen by the driver.
Automatic acceleration and braking
The video and radar sensor system control unit
determines the intensity of acceleration or deceleration of the systems vehicle in the longitudinal
direction as well as the movement and speed of the
target vehicle.
If the target object is detected by the radar sensor
system, the DISTRONIC controller unit evaluates
the target data and transmits the relevant information to the video and radar sensor system control
unit. This transmits a request to raise or reduce the
engine speed via the ESP control unit to the CDI
control unit or ME-SFI [ME] control unit.
The driver is able to intervene in the vehicle acceleration process via the accelerator pedal. Automatic acceleration is suppressed as long as the
driver is accelerating using the accelerator pedal.
This process is indicated on the multifunction
display with the message "DISTRONIC passive".
If the specified distance cannot be set by reducing
the engine speed, the video and radar sensor
system control unit transmits a braking request to
the ESP control unit. This implements the request
through controlled actuation of the traction
systems hydraulic unit.
Driving assistance systems
DISTRONIC PLUS including BAS PLUS and PRE-SAFE® brake
Automatic startoff
The regulated start-off function of DISTRONIC PLUS
enables automatic start-off and stopping in stopand-go traffic.
This function is only carried out if acknowledged by
the driver by pressing the resume from memory
switch after he or she has released the brake pedal.
Actuation of the brake pedal is recorded by the
brake lights switch, whose signals are read in by the
ESP control unit.
Standstill coordinator
For safety reasons, the system also continuously
checks, in addition to the function requirements,
whether the driver is present in the vehicle. Driver
detection takes place via the standstill coordinator,
which is integrated in the Electronic Stability
Program control unit. This monitors whether the
driver door, driver seat belt buckle, front passenger
door and engine hood are closed.

Driving assistance systems
DISTRONIC PLUS including BAS PLUS and PRE-SAFE® brake
PRE-SAFE® brake
The PRE-SAFE® brake is only available on vehicles
with DISTRONIC PLUS.
The PRE-SAFE® can help to minimize the risk of a
rear-end collision with the vehicle in front or to
reduce the consequences of an accident. In the low
speed range below v = 30 km/h, the function is
designed so that the PRE-SAFE® brake can prevent
accidents. In the speed range of v = 30 to
200 km/h, the PRE-SAFE® brake is intended to
minimize the severity of collisions.
The PRE-SAFE® brake uses the radar sensor system
to detect obstacles which remain in the path of the
vehicle for an extended period of time. If the vehicle
approaches a detected obstacle and the
PRE-SAFE® brake detects a risk of a rear-end collision, the system first issues a visual warning
(DISTRONIC warning lamp) and acoustic warning
(intermittent tone).
If the driver then does not brake or take evasive
action, the system warns through gentle automatic
braking of the vehicle with approx. 40 – 60 percent
of the maximum braking power. In the speed range
below v = 30 km/h, this can be enough to avoid a
collision. The driver and front passenger must have
their seat belts fastened for autonomous brake
system intervention to take place.
If there is still a risk of a rear-end collision and the
driver does not brake, take evasive action or accelerate significantly, automatic emergency braking
can take place. Automatic emergency braking is
only initiated directly before an accident which is no
longer avoidable. Automatically triggered emergency braking cannot prevent a collision.
110
The PRE-SAFE® brake can react to stationary obstacles, e.g. stopping or parking vehicles, at a vehicle
speed of up to approx. v = 70 km/h.
In the speed range over v = 30 km/h, PRE-SAFE®
activates preventive occupant protection measures
if there is an increased risk of a rear-end collision.
Dynamic distance warning
As of a speed of roughly v = 7 km/h, this function
warns the driver if the vehicle approaches the
vehicle in front very quickly. An intermittent alarm
tone is output and the DISTRONIC warning lamp on
the instrument cluster lights up.
Static distance warning
As of a speed of roughly v = 30 km/h, this function
warns the driver when the distance to the vehicle in
front is too short for the speed being driven over a
period of several seconds. The DISTRONIC warning
lamp on the instrument cluster then lights up. This
function is not active when DISTRONIC PLUS is
switched on.
Switching on and off:
The PRE-SAFE® brake can be switched on or off
using the onboard computer. The distance warning
readiness indicator appears on the lower multifunction display as long as the HOLD function is not
switched on.
On vehicles with Parking Guidance, the symbol is
displayed when gear range "P" is engaged or the
vehicle is driving quicker than v = 35 km/h.

BAS PLUS
BAS PLUS is only available in vehicles with
DISTRONIC PLUS.
BAS PLUS assists the driver when braking in
hazardous situations at speeds of v > 7 km/h and
uses the radar sensor system to evaluate the traffic
situation. BAS PLUS uses the radar sensor system
to detect obstacles which remain in the path of the
vehicle for an extended period of time.
BAS PLUS can also react to stationary obstacles,
e.g. stopping or parking vehicles, at a vehicle speed
of up to approx. v = 70 km/h.
If the vehicle approaches an obstacle and
BAS PLUS has detected a risk of a rear-end collision, BAS PLUS calculates the required brake pressure to avoid a rear-end collision. If the driver
depresses the brake forcefully, BAS PLUS automatically increases the brake pressure to the appropriate value for the traffic situation.
If BAS PLUS requests a particularly high brake pressure, preventive occupant protection measures
(PRE-SAFE®) are activated simultaneously.

Bluetooth® audio
(only in combination with COMAND)
With this new function, the COMAND controller unit
can receive audio signals from external devices via
Bluetooth®. Playback takes place via the speakers of
the audio system.
External devices must be authorized as an audio
source. The prerequisite is that the device must
support Audio Video Remote Control Profile (AVRCP)
or Advanced Audio Distribution Profile (A2DP).
Communication takes place via the Bluetooth®
antenna in the overhead control panel.
The display of information about the audio data on the
Audio/COMAND display and multifunction display of
the instrument cluster depends on the transmission
profile supported. Extended information such as track,
album and artist are displayed as of version 1.3 of the
AVRCP profile.
Telephony
AUX IN jack
Irrespective of the particular audio unit, an AUX-IN
jack is installed in the center console stowage
compartment (front armrest) as standard. This can be
used to connect external devices (e.g. MP3 player) to
the audio system of the vehicle. The AUX IN jack is
omitted on vehicles with media interface (code 518).
Media interface (code 518)
The media interface special equipment option
replaces the AUX-IN jack with a universal interface.
This allows mobile audio devices (e.g. MP3 player,
iPod) to be connected and video data to be transmitted in combination with COMAND.
The required adapters are included with the vehicle.
The unit is operated via the button groups on the
multifunction steering wheel, the head unit buttons,
the Audio/COMAND control panel or via the
LINGUATRONIC voice control system.
112
Basic telephony supports the connection of the mobile
phone via Bluetooth® using the Hands-Free Profile
(HFP).
The comfort telephony special equipment option
(code 386) contains a Bluetooth® module under the
armrest in the center console. This module allows a
mobile phone to be connected directly via a telephone-specific cradle. Comfort telephony thus offers
the additional functions of charging the mobile phone,
using the external vehicle antenna and downloading
SMS and contact data over a serial interface.
With both versions, the telephone can be operated via
the button groups on the multifunction steering wheel,
the head unit buttons, the Audio/COMAND control
panel or the LINGUATRONIC voice control system.
Voice output takes place via the front speakers.

b Introduction of the New CLS-Class, Model Series 218 Coupe
– This printout will not be recorded by the update service. Status: 09 / 2010 –
All the components of the bodywork have been redesigned for model series 218.
The most important features considered in the development of the bodyshell of the new CLS-Class include:
• Further improvements in the rigidity and strength
of the passenger cell
• Specifically developed deformation zones in the
front and rear end structures
• Ease of repair due to detachable front and rear end
assemblies with a simultaneous reduction in the
weight through the use of an extruded aluminum
section (at the front) and high-strength steel (at the
rear)
• Good installation conditions for drive assemblies
and the front axle thanks to the bolted frame-type
integral support
• The use of MIG soldering means that MAG weld
seams can be dispensed with completely. This has
significantly improved the quality of manufacture
and resistance to corrosion
• The proportion of high-strength sheet steel in the
bodyshell has risen from 45% to 72% by weight,
with newly developed steel grades being
increasingly used
Sheet steel was selected as the material for the vast
majority of the bodyshell. The front fenders, the
engine hood and the trunk lid are made of aluminum.
Aluminum thus makes up 8% of the bodyshell by
weight.
A high-strength steel frame-type integral support
holding the front axle, steering and engine is bolted
onto the front longitudinal members.
The spare tire well is made of glass fiber matting-reinforced thermoplastics (GMT).
Body
Bodyshell components
Front end
The front structure of model series 218 is a front end
assembly mounted on the vehicle, which consists of:
• An extruded aluminum section
• A single-part aluminum crash box connecting the
front longitudinal members
• A multi-piece framework of glass-fiber reinforced
plastic and aluminum sheet for holding the
headlamps, the bumper, the washer fluid reservoir
and the engine hood catches
The entire front end assembly is bolted to the front
end structure, as are the individual components of the
front end assembly to each other. If any parts are
damaged, this makes it possible to replace them inexpensively and with no welding required.
The connection of the front end to the passenger cell
is now made with four instead of three (predecessor)
combined sheets.
Passenger cell
The core of the body safety concept is the highstrength passenger cell in the form of a safety cage.
Its high strength under the stresses of an accident
(frontal, side-on and rear-end collisions as well as rollovers) is primarily due to:
• The increased use of high-strength, modern highstrength, ultra high-strength and heat-formed ultra
high-strength sheet steel and panels with
graduated wall thicknesses
• Components and structural zones susceptible to
heavy loads in accidents which incorporate
materials and sheet thicknesses designed to resist
these loads
• Optimized shapes and cross sections

Doors
Rear end
The door shells, including the side window frames,
incorporate an inner two-piece sheet aluminum shell
with external reinforcements (extruded sections and
deep-drawn parts). As in the current E-Class, the
hinge-bearing panel is separate from the inner shell.
This makes it possible to use a thicker panel to
improve the distribution of forces in the area of the
hinge with only a low weight penalty.
In the new CLS-Class, the locations of the independent multilink rear suspension, the fuel tank and the
spare tire well are similar to those in the predecessor
model. Nevertheless, the geometry of the body structures at the rear end is different. This applies particularly to the design of the structures in the vicinity of
the through-loading hole in the rear wall of the
passenger cell, the rear longitudinal members, the
spare tire well and the rear end assembly.
To improve the rigidity and strength of the doors, reinforcement profiles are welded on at the frames and at
the beltline. The deformation depth in side-on collisions is reduced and dent resistance is improved by
two additional extruded sections which run diagonally
and in the longitudinal direction and which are spotwelded and glued into the doors.
The fasteners for the backrest and for the hinges and
catches on the folding backrest (special equipment) of
the rear bench seat are mounted on an all-round
support structure which is welded to the inner shell of
the side wall on both sides and to the floor panel at the
bottom, and is clinched to the rear shelf at the top.
This supporting structure further improves the
torsional strength of the bodyshell.
To increase their strength, enhance their strain energy
and improve their deformation behavior, the multipart, high-strength steel rear longitudinal members
have a cross section which is closed along their entire
length with graduated sheet thicknesses, as in the
predecessor model.
The rear end assembly consists of a steel flexural
member with integral deformation zone.
Weight is optimized through the use of ultra highstrength steel, which is flexibly rolled so that the areas
subject to the greatest loads are thicker than those
under lower stress.
For reasons of weight and corrosion protection,
plastic (glass fiber matting-reinforced thermoplastic)
is used for the spare wheel well as in the predecessor
model.

Floor
Corrosion protection
The floor of the passenger cell consists of a sheet
metal part, with three parts connected to each other
by laser welding prior to forming. The middle part is
thicker and forms the transmission tunnel, acting as
the backbone of the floor system. Additional solid
tunnel reinforcements are placed on top. Full-length
longitudinal floor members are now installed to
improve force progression into the floor structure. To
the left and right of the tunnel it is reinforced from the
inside with:
Long-term protection against corrosion is guaranteed
by full galvanization of the steel body components.
Structural areas that are particularly susceptible to
corrosion are protected by additional cavity preservation.
• Reinforcements between the inner shell of the
front longitudinal members and the tunnel, and
between the tunnel and the side longitudinal
members
• A rigid crossmember for mounting the seats and
for lateral support on the tunnel in the event of a
side collision
• A further crossmember in the area of the B-pillar
As in the predecessor model, the junction with the
rear floor assembly is formed by a continuous rear
seat crossmember with additional reinforcements
which is extremely strong with regard to side collisions.
Body
Bodyshell components
To supplement this, the following protective measures
are used in addition to regular galvanizing in the manufacture of the sheet steel:
• Use of organically coated sheet steel
• Cataphoretic immersion primer bath
• Seam sealing
Underfloor protection
Because the underfloor area is entirely covered with
penta laminate, it was possible to omit the PVC underfloor protection. The advantages are:
• Lower aerodynamic drag
• Interchangeability if damaged
(ease of repair)
• Detachability for vehicle recycling
• Increased impact resistance (stone chipping
protection)
