But for total enjoyment you need the assurance that the technology’s right too. This is true even of alloy wheels, which many people wrongly see as designed merely for visual impact. Like so many things in automotive engineering, alloy wheels originated in the racing world. When every second counts, materials need to be light, strong and totally reliable. And there is an important safety aspect too: wheels have to be perfectly balanced and offer good heat conductivity for maximum brake cooling. Our chassis components were also designed with safety in mind: tailor-made springs for individual models, gas shock-absorbers and fine-tuned torsion bars all help ensure your Mercedes has a firm grip on the road in all driving conditions. It’s good to know you can keep your passion under control while making your Mercedes a real head-turner. If you can’t beat the wind, join forces with it. There are certain things you can’t avoid – and a headwind is one of these. But you can actually use it to your advantage if you take the right approach. That is why the issue of aerodynamic drag always causes such a stir at AMG. It is not just designers who work on our front air dams and rear aprons, our side skirts and rear spoilers. First and foremost, we call upon our engineers, who use wind tunnels to find out how to make the best use of the air flow. Then there are our experienced drivers who test the practical benefits of AMG styling under real driving conditions. The idea is to minimise aerodynamic lift, especially at high speeds, so that your Mercedes hugs the road in all driving situations. But the benefits don’t stop there: AMG styling also ensures optimum air flow to the engine and brakes, for example. Of course, all the components have to blend unobtrusively with the design of the particular Mercedes model concerned. A sporting challenge which we are happy to meet!
